Ample History
Residents of Oakland have embraced their local history and have preserved both the structures and the history of the community since the 1960s. Two no-for-profit organizations took the lead- Oakland Landmarks, Inc. works to preserve buildings and artifacts, especially those related to Dr. Hiram Rutherford; while the Oakland Historical Foundation specializes in exhibits and programming (it has become inactive in 2011). Independence Pioneer Village is the result of one man's love and appreciation for the log structures of yesteryear.
